History was made in Japan's timepiece industry in 1881, when K. Hattori & Co., Ltd. (later renamed Seiko Corporation) began wholesaling and retailing imported watches and clocks. In 1892, Seikosha Co., Ltd., the Seiko Group's first manufacturing division, was established to make wall clocks. But in terms of industrial history, Japan's most significant contribution was the development of the quartz watch.
